Engagment Ring Inspiration

There’s something quietly magical about commissioning an engagement ring. A bespoke ring isn’t just a piece of jewellery; it’s a moment, a memory, and a story you get to shape.

If you’re thinking about going bespoke, here are some key things to consider when choosing your ring, based on years of working with couples to find something perfect for them:

Budget + Staring Points

You don’t need to have a fully formed idea before coming to me. Most people start with just one or two of the following:

  • A budget range

  • A metal preference (yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, platinum)

  • A stone you’re drawn to

  • A shape or setting style

  • A few saved images for inspiration

Even one of these is enough - the rest we explore together.

Lab-Grown vs. Natural Stones

Both are beautiful, lasting options.

Lab-Grown Diamonds

  • Physically and chemically identical to natural diamonds

  • More affordable, so you can often go larger or choose a higher quality

  • A popular choice for clients who want a lower-impact option

Natural Diamonds & Gemstones

  • Each stone is unique, formed over millions of years

  • Beautiful for clients wanting traditional, one-of-a-kind materials

  • Available in a wider range of natural colours (especially in sapphires)

I most frequently work with tourmalines, especially bicolour tourmalines - beautiful semi-precious stones known for their naturally blended colours. No two are ever the same, which makes them a perfect choice for a ring that feels one-of-a-kind. I often have a curated selection in stock if you’d like to choose one as the starting point for your ring.

If you’re drawn to something different, I can help you source other lab-grown or natural stones - diamonds, sapphires, or something more unusual.

Stone Shape + Colour

The shape of the stone sets the tone for the entire ring - whether you’re drawn to clean, architectural lines or something softer and more organic. Some favourite shapes include:

  • Round

  • Oval

  • Emerald cut

  • Pear

  • Cushion

  • Marquise

When it comes to colour, you’re not limited to diamonds. I specialise in tourmalines, particularly bicolour tourmalines, which naturally blend multiple hues in a single stone. Their colours can range from soft greens to vibrant pinks, sunset oranges to deep teals; often all at once. Each one is completely unique, making them a beautiful choice for a ring that feels personal and expressive.

If tourmalines aren’t quite what you’re looking for, I can also help you source a range of other stones, including:

  • Sapphires (blue, green, yellow, pink, teal)

  • Emeralds

  • Morganite

  • Champagne or salt-and-pepper diamonds

  • Lab-grown diamonds in soft blush or icy tones

If your partner loves colour in their wardrobe or home, a vibrant or unusual gemstone can be a lovely way to reflect their personality; and tourmalines are often the perfect place to begin.

Settings: Bezel vs. Prong

The setting affects both the look and the practicality of the ring. Here are the main styles:

Prong Setting

  • The stone is held by small claws

  • Maximises sparkle and light

  • Classic, elegant, and timeless

  • Works well for most shapes

Bezel Setting

  • The metal wraps fully around the stone

  • Sleek, modern, protective

  • Great for active lifestyles and daily wear

  • Beautiful with coloured stones for a contemporary feel

We can also explore half-bezels, compass settings, halo styles, or more sculptural pieces - the setting is where we can get creative.

Metal Choice

Your metal changes the warmth and overall character of the piece:

  • 18ct Yellow Gold: classic, glowy, universally flattering

  • 18ct White Gold or Platinum: cool-toned, minimal, great for diamonds

  • Rose Gold: soft, romantic, unique

  • Mixed Metal: subtle contrast for a modern twist

I can show you samples so you can see how each colour sits against different stones.

Lifestyle Matters

Think about how your partner uses their hands day-to-day:

  • Do they work with their hands or exercise frequently?

  • Do they prefer minimal, low-profile jewellery?

  • Are they careful with delicate pieces or more relaxed?

This helps us choose the right setting height, band thickness, and stone durability.

The Fun Part: Designing Together

This is where the ring really becomes yours. Once we’ve talked through stones, metals, and settings, we start shaping the design together.

Some people come to me with a clear idea, while others prefer to begin with one of my pre-existing designs and evolve it into something new; tweaking proportions, changing the setting, swapping stones, or reimagining the silhouette entirely.

We can incorporate hidden engravings, meaningful symbols tucked on the inside of the band, or small design details only the two of you will know about. If you love characterful stones, we can explore fun shapes, alternative cuts, or even bicolour tourmalines - stones that blend two hues in a single piece and create a completely one-of-a-kind look.

Once we’ve explored the options, I develop sketches or digital renders based on everything you love; your partner’s style, the stones you’re drawn to, the symbolism you want to include.

Then we refine it together until it feels perfect.
